What was “the tower projecting from the upper house of the king”?

Nehemiah 3:25 (ESV)

25 and to the corner. Palal the son of Uzai repaired opposite the buttress and the tower projecting from the upper house of the king at the court of the guard. After him Pedaiah the son of Parosh

We might picture that in the immediate street just beyond the corner, there was a tower, that is, a watchtower from whose height a watchman could see what (or who) was approaching the city. This particular tower was connected to the upper house of the king. The wall would run alongside (and perhaps incorporate) this landmark.
