Nehemiah 12:39 affirms the proximity of the Tower of Hananel to the Tower of the Hundred on the city’s north wall (somewhat further to the west). Years earlier, Israel’s prophets had mentioned this tower when they spoke of the rebuilding of the city of Jerusalem (Jeremiah 31:38; Zechariah 14:10). Its rebuilding through the labours of Eliashib and his fellow priests now underscores the fulfillment of earlier prophecy.
1 Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brothers the priests, and they built the Sheep Gate. They consecrated it and set its doors. They consecrated it as far as the Tower of the Hundred, as far as the Tower of Hananel.
