What was the projecting tower?

Nehemiah 3:26 (ESV)

26 and the temple servants living on Ophel repaired to a point opposite the Water Gate on the east and the projecting tower.

This may or may not have been the same tower as mentioned in the previous verse. It would appear that this section of the wall ran between the old Water Gate to its east (downward the steep slope) and the tower to its west (upward the slope).
