Why did David send spies to spy out Saul’s camp?

1 Samuel 26:3–4 (ESV)

3 And Saul encamped on the hill of Hachilah, which is beside the road on the east of Jeshimon. But David remained in the wilderness. When he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness,

David wanted to know where Saul was, so that he could organize an encounter with him. He was active in seeking out such an encounter, confident of the Lord’s protection as he did so, and eager to reaffirm his innocence and challenge the unjust treatment that he had received.1
