Why does she need to be refreshed with raisins and apples?

Song of Solomon 2:5 (ESV)

5 Sustain me with raisins; refresh me with apples, for I am sick with love.

As the young woman imagines their lovemaking, she calls for sustenance and refreshing because she is lovesick. The encounters she has anticipated are imagined, so her lovesickness is due to her longing for these encounters to be fulfilled. What would sustain and refresh her are raisins and apples. She has already compared her lover to an apple tree whose sweet fruit she delights in (Song of Solomon 2:3). In Song of Solomon 8:5, lovemaking is associated with an apple tree. So, the antidote to her lovesickness is the love of her beloved. She longs to be with him with a longing that makes her weak and only his love can refresh her.1
