In the case of severe chronic skin disease, the priest looked for two specific symptoms. Firstly, if there was a white swelling and the hair on the sore had turned white. Secondly, if the flesh on the sore was raw. The term raw flesh is literally living flesh, that is, flesh that is seething or bleeding.
