1. Exposition

What does Jesus’ self-description as “the Amen” mean?

Revelation 3:14 (ESV)

14 “And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s creation.

The apostle Paul had used the term “amen” to describe the identity of Jesus of Nazareth in 2 Corinthians 1:20, with this explanation: “All the promises of God find their Yes in him.” All God’s promises spoken over the span of centuries received their fulfillment in Jesus Christ so that he is the evidence that God keeps his word, is true and faithful. One may think of the Lord’s first promise after the fall into sin as spoken in Genesis 3:15. In the fulness of time Jesus Christ crushed the head of the serpent through his work on the cross. He is the Amen, in whom all God’s promises find their Yes.
