The Lord tells this church that more difficult times are ahead; beyond the present “tribulation” and “poverty” and “slander” will come imprisonment. The devil, though, can do nothing without the consent of almighty God, as Jesus already made clear with his self-identification as “the first” (see also Job 1:6–12; Job 2:3–6). That he now foretells what will shortly happen will give evidence to his people that he indeed controls all things. Yet when the Lord permits Satan to afflict these Christians, the Lord will ensure that these trials advance his kingdom and promote his glory, as is pledged in his self-identification as “the last.” That is also why Jesus tells them not to fear.
10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
