  2. Exposition

Is Jesus' self-identification in the opening sentence of each letter significant to understanding the point of his letter?

Revelation 2:1–3:22 (ESV)

1 “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: ‘The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands.

Yes, it definitely is. The Lord’s self-identification at the start of each letter is not random (the Lord of lords never is!). The Lord has “done his research” on his churches, knows what he needs to say to each church, and now with his self-identification he sets the stage to speak authoritatively to the needs of his church. For a reader to understand the point of the letter well, it is imperative that he understand the point of the name the Lord gives to himself.
