5 All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides very many unwalled villages.

Some of the cities that Israel captured in the northern Transjordan were heavily fortified with high walls, gates, and bars. There were also many unwalled villages, or agricultural settlements, that were too small or poor to have proper defences.
