Lamentations 5:14 (ESV)

14 The old men have left the city gate, the young men their music.

The city gates were the centres of activity. It was there where trade took place, stories were told, important matters were decided, friends were met, and music was heard. Now this part of life had ceased for the occupied people. The (heavily damaged) gates were quiet.
