Who were the Medes?

Isaiah 13:17 (ESV)

17 Behold, I am stirring up the Medes against them, who have no regard for silver and do not delight in gold.

The Medes were the most powerful of the Persian nations at the time. They were not coming by their own strength to destroy Babylon but were called by God to carry out his judgment.
