What did it mean to be banned from the assembly?

Ezra 10:8 (ESV)

8 and that if anyone did not come within three days, by order of the officials and the elders all his property should be forfeited, and he himself banned from the congregation of the exiles.

Being expelled from the assembly excluded a person from owning property, worshiping at the temple, and having an influence among friends and neighbours. The strong punishments for noncompliance showed how serious the matter was in the eyes of the leaders of the community.1
