Who were the king’s seven counsellors?

Ezra 7:14 (ESV)

14 For you are sent by the king and his seven counselors to make inquiries about Judah and Jerusalem according to the Law of your God, which is in your hand,

It was common practice in the ancient Near East for rulers to have a group of royal advisors. The council of seven advisors was made up of the heads of the leading families in the Persian Empire.1 They were directly involved with the decisions made by the king (see Esther 1:14).2
