Why was the city set on fire?

Judges 1:8 (ESV)

8 And the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire.

Fire is the sign of God’s wrath. The use of fire brought about a whole burnt sacrifice, completely consuming the evil city, making room for the new city of God.1
