Eliashib was mentioned in Nehemiah 3:1 as the first volunteer listed; he (with his brothers) rebuilt the Sheep Gate located on the northeast corner of the city near the temple. The present text tells us that he had a house a distance away, more toward the south side of town. Nehemiah mentions this house as a landmark for where the eastern wall was built, with the detail that Baruch repaired the wall up to Eliashib’s door.
20 After him Baruch the son of Zabbai repaired another section from the buttress to the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest.
