1. Romans 15:5–13 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why is God called the God of endurance, encouragement and hope?

Romans 15:5–13 (ESV)

5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus,

Romans 15:5, Romans 15:13

God is called the God of endurance and encouragement in Romans 15:5 because he is our source of strength. The Scriptures point the way, but God himself is the One who gives us strength. The hope of the peoples is a gift from God, who gives them hope through Jesus Christ. He is the God of hopeRomans 15:13: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. The church is called, in unity and with one voice to give glory publicly to the God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is because the hope that God gives to the Gentiles in this time of salvation must generate a spirit-filled church that is also a church full of joy and peace. That hope then flows over the city of Rome, reaching also those who have not yet received the strength of the Spirit in faith.1
