Much has been asked of the readers in the preceding verses. This is beyond the capabilities of man but let no one forget that there is an inexhaustible source of strength with God. This may be invoked. The description the God of peace
is helpful here (see also Romans 16:20; 1 Corinthians 14:33). God wants to fill us with heavenly peace. It is promising that Jesus wants to give that same peace to those who follow him (John 16:33). The writers of this letter (1 Thessalonians 1:1) intercede for this. They beg God to keep the whole man (spirit, soul, and body) blameless in this way until the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is remarkable that this very text, which speaks about being kept blameless by God, was recently found on a tombstone in Thessalonica. This is proof that precisely this verse made an impression on that congregation. May the God of peace also keep us blameless today for the great day of the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. Whoever perseveres by God’s power will have it oh so good afterward (1 Thessalonians 4:17).
23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
