Commentary on Luke 18:2 (Summary)

Luke 18:2 (ESV)

2 He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man.

Here we first see a judge appear. This man does not fear God and is unconcerned with people. Judges in Israel had the task of ensuring sound justice (Deuteronomy 16:18). And in 2 Chronicles 19:6 we read: Consider what you do, for you judge not for man, but for the Lord. He is with you in giving judgment (see also Psalm 72:1–4; Psalm 82:1–4). The judge Jesus is talking about here is completely different. He disdains justice (see Luke 18:6) and shows no reverence for God. Something threatens to go terribly wrong here.
