It is precisely in adhering to God's laws and commandments that humanity demonstrates its reverence for God. Moses often recalls their experience at Horeb (e.g., in Deuteronomy 4:10). God's appearance to his people there was awe-inspiring. The mountain was wrapped in smoke, because the Lord had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly
(Exodus 19:18). It is therefore fitting for man to show reverence for this mighty and exalted God. We are strongly advised to live according to his will. This applies throughout life and to all generations. Those who show this respect for God's laws have a future. Moses may remind the people that a long life is promised to those who fear the Lord. This echoes the fifth commandment (Deuteronomy 5:16).
Throughout the Bible, we find the call to live in reverence before the Lord. This is always accompanied by a promise. For example, in Psalm 25:8–10, The Lord instructs those who fear him the way he should go.
The writer of Proverbs understood this well: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge
(Proverbs 1:7).
2 that you may fear the LORD your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long.
