Many Hebrew manuscripts emend the verb פלה (to separate, divide, distinguish
) to פלא (to show wonder; to do marvellously
). While this might fit the context better, in the sense that God wonderfully makes known his steadfast love, the verb to distinguish
is not that ill-fitting. Notably, the word is used a few times in the exodus narrative. When the Lord sends the plagues, he does so on the Egyptians, not the Israelites. He distinguished between the two nations (Exodus 9:4; Exodus 11:7). And in that way he made known his steadfast love.
7 Wondrously show your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand.
