Why did David dance before the Lord in a linen ephod?

2 Samuel 6:14–15 (ESV)

14 And David danced before the LORD with all his might. And David was wearing a linen ephod.

The linen ephod was a priestly garment (see 1 Samuel 2:18; 1 Samuel 22:18). Dressed in this garment, David had removed his royal robes and he identified himself as a servant of the Lord.1 The Lord is the true and great King; David is but his servant.
