Were Joab and Abishai right to avenge the death of Asahel?

2 Samuel 3:30 (ESV)

30 So Joab and Abishai his brother killed Abner, because he had put their brother Asahel to death in the battle at Gibeon.

Since Asahel died in battle (2 Samuel 2:18–23), his death was not one which had to be avenged. If he had died as a result of murder or manslaughter then Abner would have had a case to answer (Numbers 35:9–34).1
