  2. Exposition

Did death have dominion over Christ prior to his resurrection?

Romans 6:8–10 (ESV)

8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

Yes, in the sense that he had to endure death in order to ascend to the heavenly life in God’s presence. In Romans 6:8–10 we read: Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. Christ raised Lazarus from the dead, but he would die again later. Jesus was raised in a different manner (see Romans 6:4: by the glory of the Father). As such Christ, who once had to die, never has to die again. He has been glorified, and death no longer has any authority over him. The authority of death is connected directly to the dominion of sin. Through divine glory, Christ has been exalted far above the realm of sin and death, now living a life to God, i.e. a life near God and with God. God bestowed the Shechinah on the man Jesus. The high priest appeared before the ark of the covenant with the sacrificial blood in the holy of holies once every year, but Jesus Christ now and forever has a glorious countenance.1
