Why did David proclaim his innocence?

2 Samuel 3:28 (ESV)

28 Afterward, when David heard of it, he said, “I and my kingdom are forever guiltless before the LORD for the blood of Abner the son of Ner.

Joab and Abishai had incurred blood-guilt as a result of their killing of Abner.1 It was not a legitimate or lawful killing. David wanted to make it as clear as possible to all people that he did not have a hand in Abner’s death.
