Sermon goal for 2 Samuel 3:1–5

2 Samuel 3:1–5 (ESV)

1 There was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David. And David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul became weaker and weaker.

The books of 1 and 2 Samuel seek to ask and answer two important questions, namely:

  1. Will kingship help Israel obey the terms of the old covenant and flourish in the Land of Promise?
Kingship will not help if the king is someone who refuses to obey the Lord and walk in his ways.

  2. What kind of king does Israel need?
They need a king who lives in submission to the Lord and leads the people in obedience.

For 2 Samuel 3:1–5, you will explain why the author tells us about David’s various wives and sons. You will need to make it clear that polygamy is not sanctioned by Scripture and that David’s actions in marrying numerous women was contrary to the biblical ideal. Having shown the weakness of David, you will emphasize that Jesus Christ is the true and better king and that he warns us to be careful so that we do not fall into temptation.
