How did David inquire of the Lord?

2 Samuel 2:1 (ESV)

1 After this David inquired of the LORD, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” And the LORD said to him, “Go up.” David said, “To which shall I go up?” And he said, “To Hebron.”

Abiathar the priest was with David (1 Samuel 23:6–14). He had the ephod with him and was thus able to help David seek direction from the Lord.1 David’s action stands in stark contrast with those of Abner (and Saul) where there was no inquiry and no desire to listen to the Lord.2
