1. Romans 2:16 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What does it mean that God will judge by Christ Jesus?

Romans 2:16 (ESV)

16 on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

In short

By saying that God will judge by Christ Jesus, Paul

  1. clarifies the common Jewish teaching that God would judge by another; or

  2. introduces an entirely new teaching that God would judge by another.

When Paul says God will judge the secrets of men by Christ Jesus, he affirms and clarifies typical Jewish teaching. It was not uncommon for Jewish teaching to hold that God would judge by another. For example, we learn from Isaiah 42:1 that God’s chosen servant would bring forth justice to the nations. Then in 1 Enoch 45 and 49 we read that God’s Chosen One tries the works of men on Judgment Day and will judge the secrets of men. What is unique about Paul’s teaching is that he explains Christ Jesus is the Chosen One who will judge.

Some contend that Paul is articulating the new Christian teaching that God would judge by a mediator, namely, Christ Jesus. These hold that the Jews never taught that God would judge by another, but that God alone would judge. The problem with this argument is that we have Jewish sources, such as Enoch, that suggest the Jews did expect God to judge by the Chosen One. Further, we know from the Old Testament that Yahweh would judge on the Day of the Lord, and New Testament authors associate the name Yahweh with Jesus, implying that the prophets foreshadowed that Jesus would judge.

Thus, when Paul says God will judge by Christ Jesus, he affirms and clarifies that God would judge by a mediator.

Interpretation 1:
Paul clarifies the common Jewish teaching that God would judge by another.

Summary:

The Jews traditionally believed that God would judge by a mediator, and they debated over who this might be. Paul affirms that God will judge by another and identifies this other as Christ Jesus. On Judgment Day, all will pass through the judgment of Christ.

That God will judge by Christ Jesus, who is himself God and yet a man like us, is a great comfort for all who put their faith in him. For as a man like us, Jesus knows our weakness and frailty, and he knows what it is like to be tempted. Christ Jesus will welcome with forgiving arms those who repent and put their faith in him.

Minor differences:

Our authors agree that when Paul says God will judge by Christ Jesus, he affirms and clarifies a traditional Jewish belief that God would judge by a mediator. Paul makes clear that since Christ’s incarnation, there is no longer any question who that mediator is.

James Dunn explains that the Jews in Paul’s day argued that it was either Enoch, Melchizedek, or the Son of Man who would be the mediator by whom God would judge.1 Richard Longenecker points out that the Jews also posited the elect one and Abel as the possible mediatorial judge of all humanity.2

Interpretation 2:
Paul introduces an entirely new teaching that God would judge by another.

Summary:

The Jews taught that God and God alone would judge the world. Now Paul introduces a new teaching, which is that judgment will take place by Christ Jesus.
