Commentary on 1 Kings 11:18 (Summary)

1 Kings 11:18 (ESV)

18 They set out from Midian and came to Paran and took men with them from Paran and came to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave him a house and assigned him an allowance of food and gave him land.

It is difficult to understand why the writer gives this amount of information about the route that Hadad (and those who accompanied him) took to Egypt. The detail might be given so that the reader can pay attention to the story of Hadad, as it shows some similarities with the accounts of Joseph and Moses given in the concluding chapters of Genesis and the opening of Exodus.

Yet there are significant differences. Hadad received from Pharaoh what appears to be a warm welcome. He was a destitute exile. Pharaoh, nonetheless, gave him a house, an allowance of food, and also land that he might produce his own food.
