Why do the men call out?

Acts 10:18 (ESV)

18 and called out to ask whether Simon who was called Peter was lodging there.

Because the men have come to a stop at the gate, they are not able to knock on the door. As a result, they must shout/call from the gate so that the people inside the house can hear them.
