What are treasures on earth?

Matthew 6:19 (ESV)

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,

Treasure is a reference to valuable possessions.1 Earthly treasures are the things of this world (Ecclesiastes 1:1–2:26). Though necessary for daily living, the things of this world are vain in the sense that they do not endure. It is not worth storing up treasures that have such a limited time value.2
