What is the task of the priest?

Hebrews 5:1 (ESV)

1 For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.

The priest’s task is to achieve something for the people in the things that relate to God. The high priest is a mediator, one who builds bridges (pontifex) between God and man.1
