1. Leviticus 26:1–46 (ESV)
  2. Structure and outline

What is the textual outline of Leviticus 26?

Leviticus 26:1–46 (ESV)

1 “You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect an image or pillar, and you shall not set up a figured stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the LORD your God.

Leviticus 26:1–46 is a collection of blessings on those who keep the law and curses on those who do not (see also Deuteronomy 28:1–68). The clause, I am the Lord (your God), occurs numerous times in the chapter (Leviticus 26:1, Leviticus 26:2, Leviticus 26:13, Leviticus 26:44, Leviticus 26:45). This serves as a clear structural marker, allowing the text to be divided as follows:

Leviticus 26:1–2             Fundamentals of the Law

           Leviticus 26:3–13            Blessings

Leviticus 26:4–5             Rain and Good Harvest

                      Leviticus 26:6–10           Peace and Security

                      Leviticus 26:11–13         God’s Presence

          Leviticus 26:14–45        Curses

                    Leviticus 26:14–17          General Curses

Leviticus 26:18–20         Drought and Poor Harvest

                       Leviticus 26:21–22          Wild Animals

Leviticus 26:23–26        War: Plague, and Famine

Leviticus 26:27–39        War: Cannibalism and Deportation

                       Leviticus 26:40–45          Promise of Restoration
