Leviticus 26:1–46 describes the blessings and curses that Israel will receive depending on their faithfulness to the covenant that God established with them when he delivered them from bondage in Egypt. In the ancient near East, these covenant sanctions often appear at the end of a covenant document. The Hebrews were meant to understand the implications of Leviticus 26:1–46 in light of everything that has gone before. That is, faithfulness to the Lord’s commandments in Leviticus 1:1–25:55 will result in covenant blessing and joy. Conversely, unfaithfulness will bring about judgement. The ultimate goal in these promises and warnings was to encourage obedience and discourage disobedience to the law.
