What does it mean to swear an oath by earth?

Matthew 5:35 (ESV)

35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.

To swear an oath by earth is to invoke God seeing, as he is the Creator of this world, and the earth belongs to him (Isaiah 66:1–2). God is witness to your oath when you swear by earth; it is not a lesser oath that you are not obligated to keep.
