What is the function of “behold”?

Judges 14:5 (ESV)

5 Then Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah, and they came to the vineyards of Timnah. And behold, a young lion came toward him roaring.

The term does convey something of the suddenness, unexpectedness of the lion’s appearance. The lion appears out of nowhere, almost as though the Lord had summoned it for the occasion.
