30 At that time Joshua built an altar to the LORD, the God of Israel, on Mount Ebal,

Mount Ebal (and Mount Gerizim) was about twenty miles (thirty-two kilometres) north of Ai.1 They overlooked the town of Shechem. Mount Ebal was the site where Moses commanded Israel to build an alter upon their entrance into the land (Deuteronomy 27:4–6).
