Commentary on Psalm 49:18 (Summary)

Psalm 49:18 (ESV)

18 For though, while he lives, he counts himself blessed and though you get praise when you do well for yourself

Though the author is content with his life, he focuses once again on the wealthy man, who thinks he can be proud of his accomplishments. But how short-sighted this is, even though it shows a commonly seen behaviour: someone who does well tends to brag about that.

Already in Deuteronomy we are warned against that, as in Deuteronomy 29:18–20: “Beware lest there be among you a man or woman or clan or tribe whose heart is turning away today from the Lord…a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit…he hears the words of this sworn covenant, blesses himself in his heart, saying, I shall be safe, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart. The Lord will not be willing to forgive him.”

Listen also to the boasting of the man who did well, in Luke 12:19 And I will say to my soul, ‘Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry. God requires his soul that very night.
