Why did Saul sleep on the roof?

1 Samuel 9:26 (ESV)

26 Then at the break of dawn Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Up, that I may send you on your way.” So Saul arose, and both he and Samuel went out into the street.

Sleeping overnight on the roof of the house was common practice in the Middle East (2 Kings 4:10). It would often be cooler than the temperature in the house.1
