Who were the “officials”?

Zephaniah 3:3 (ESV)

3 Her officials within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves that leave nothing till the morning.

The “officials” were those who had oversight over governmental and military affairs (see also Zephaniah 1:8; Jeremiah 26:10; Jeremiah 36:12, Jeremiah 36:21; Jeremiah 43:5). They also bore some influence on religious life.
