1. Jeremiah 25:13 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

In what “book” are the words of judgment against Babylon written?

Jeremiah 25:13 (ESV)

13 I will bring upon that land all the words that I have uttered against it, everything written in this book, which Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations.

The Lord says regarding Babylon, I will bring upon that land all the words that I have uttered against it, everything written in this book, which Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations. The historical setting for Jeremiah 25:1–38 is given as the year 605 BC (see Jeremiah 25:1), which is the same year that the Lord instructs Jeremiah to write all the words that he has spoken to him on a scroll. Jeremiah does this with Baruch’s help (Jeremiah 36:1–4). When the scroll is read to Jehoiakim by Baruch, the king destroys it, and Baruch writes it again and adds to it (Jeremiah 36:5–32). It is therefore most likely that the book referred to in Jeremiah 25:13 is the scroll that Baruch wrote, either the first or the second version. If we assume that the oracles of judgment against the nations (Jeremiah 46:1–51:64) were also preached by Jeremiah at this time, then it is likely that the book included these sermons of judgment against the nations.
