1. 1 Peter 4:7 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is the relationship between “self-controlled” and “sober-minded”?

1 Peter 4:7 (ESV)

7 The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.

Though each term has its own nuance, in the present sentence the two are essentially identical with each term helping to define the colour of the other. By using both terms Peter can be more precise in describing the concerted single-mindedness he wants of his readers.
