Genesis 2:5 (ESV)

5 When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground,

When Adam and Eve were created on the sixth day, there was plenty of food for them to eat. The trees were filled with fruit (see also Genesis 1:12; Genesis 2:9).

The Lord made all the plants and trees but here no crops are grown yet. The bush (plants) of the field and the small plant (herbs) of the field refer to crops grown in a field. The word field here indicates a piece of land that needs to be cultivated. These crops require rain and a human being to plant the seeds. People needed to take the seed from the seed-bearing plants that were present and sow it on the land.
