What is the significance of the fact the Samuel was wearing a linen ephod?

1 Samuel 2:18 (ESV)

18 Samuel was ministering before the LORD, a boy clothed with a linen ephod.

A linen ephod was a simple garment, possibly similar to a white tunic or a long shirt. In wearing such an article, Samuel is depicted as a little priest (see also 1 Samuel 22:18).1
