Why did Peter and John have to go up to get to the temple?

Acts 3:1 (ESV)

1 Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.

With the temple being situated on Mount Zion, the highest point of the city of Jerusalem, people would have to go up whenever they go to the temple.
