What was the time of prayer?

Acts 3:1 (ESV)

1 Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.

The time of prayer was when the Jewish priests would come to offer the daily sacrifices prescribed under the terms of the old covenant (see Exodus 29:38–43; Numbers 28:3–8). These sacrifices took place in the morning and again in the afternoon. During this time Jewish believers would gather in the courts for formal times of prayer.1
