1 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,

The Jewish priests were men who had responsibility for bringing sacrifices at the temple, leading the people in prayers,1 and collecting the temple tax.2 They also had a role in teaching (Leviticus 10:11).
