How do the words “all my servants were gathered there for the work” relate to the earlier part of this verse?
Previous governors sent their servants to extract taxes from the people (Nehemiah 5:15) and serve as the governors' agents in confiscating land when someone could no longer pay the imposed tax. Nehemiah’s servants did neither. Rather, they were gathered there for the work,
with the term there
referring to the wall and thus to the work
of building and defence (Nehemiah 4:16). These final words of this verse, then, overlap somewhat with the opening words of this verse. This overlap underscores the importance Nehemiah attributes to the wall as his priority. Similarly, this overlap serves to bookend the central words of this verse, We acquired no land,
which captures the thrust of this entire paragraph.
16 I also persevered in the work on this wall, and we acquired no land, and all my servants were gathered there for the work.
