  2. Eksposisi

How does Nehemiah explain the significance of his illustration?

Nehemiah 5:13 (ESV)

13 I also shook out the fold of my garment and said, “So may God shake out every man from his house and from his labor who does not keep this promise. So may he be shaken out and emptied.” And all the assembly said “Amen” and praised the LORD. And the people did as they had promised.

He says plainly in the hearing of the entire crowd that he wishes God would do precisely what he has just done to his pocket to anyone who breaks his oath; God will shake any such person from his house and from his labor, rendering futile all his efforts to enrich himself. As God himself put it in his third commandment, he will not hold guiltless the person who misuses God’s name (Exodus 20:7).
