While the disciples are called to persevere to the end (Matthew 10:22), they are expected to do so with wisdom (Matthew 10:16). Doing so entails not seeking martyrdom, and Jesus even commands them to avoid this by fleeing to the next town in order to go and proclaim the gospel there (Matthew 10:5–8, Matthew 10:16).1
23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
